The Reese River was named after John Reese, a member of Colonel Edward Steptoe's expedition of exploration in 1854. In 1859 Reese served as a guide for Captain James H. Simpson's military survey which established the central route from Salt Lake City to Genoa, Nevada. The Reese River is a tributary of the Humboldt River to the north and its headwaters are in the Toiyabe Mountains far to the south. Because it was a dependable source of water it was important to travelers, freighters, stage coaches, and pony express riders moving through this part of Nevada. In 1862 it gave its name to an important mining district centered on Austin, Nevada.
