Saint Sergius entered the priesthood when he was twenty three years old. He spent his first years as a monk living in the wilderness. While there be was befriended by a bear and shared his meager supply of food with the bear. It is believed by some that he learned to speak the language of the bear and perhaps of other animals as well.

Archbishop Innocent was elevated to the position of Metropolitan of Moscow in 1867. In addition to his duties as Metropolitan, Innocent also served concurrently as Archimandrite of the Holy Trinity Monastery. Earlier in his career he had been an Orthodox Christian missionary and Bishop in Sitka, Alaska, and is sometimes referred to as the "American Saint." Innocent died in 1879 and was buried in this monastery. In 1977 he was raised to sainthood. Biography of Saint Innocent.
