Every once in a while our helicopter ventured out over the ocean and we had an aerial view of the juxtaposition of land and sea. Jet black mountains, crimson soil, emerald green valleys, golden strands of sand, alabaster surf, turquoise shallows and cobalt blue deeps. At one point, we even glimpsed sea turtles swimming near shore. These waters around Kauai are some of the cleanest in the world and they are as rich in wildlife as they are beautiful to behold. I envy the lucky men and women who get to fly visitors around this paradise all year long. Those jobs have to be some of the best imaginable. Which is not to say that they are uniformly appreciated by all who see them. We are told that on occasion, some of the folks who are exhaustedly struggling to hike one of the wilderness trails look up at the helicopter with something less than approbation.
