Without taking anything away from our accommodations, I do have one observation that the hotel industry probably won't appreciate very much. Our hotel and every single one of the others that we saw while we were on Kauai are so lavish as to be somewhat out of keeping with the general ambiance of the rest of the island. Kauai strikes me as being a thoroughly humble community set in an absolutely magnificent natural paradise. The hotels on the island feature a bit too much Las Vegas style opulence than I believe should be necessary in a perfect world. I presume that this is a response to their customer's demands, so I don't really blame the hotel managements. I just note that it is too bad that these days the traveling public requires the hotel to be the destination even in a place like Kauai. Desert Springs, California maybe, but come on, the Garden isle itself should be destination enough for anyone.
Having said that it might just be that this very fact helps shield the island from at least some of the pressure exerted by us tourists. If a lot of us spend much, if not most, of our Kauai vacation sitting by the pool in the hotel, the beaches are that much less crowded.
