Russia is picturesque and there is a lot to photograph. Generally speaking photography by tourists seems to be tolerated in most places that we visited. Russian tourists have a lot of cameras and are busy taking pictures of each other in front of famous places. Our guides usually told us where we were permitted to photograph and where we were not. Most museums charged a fee of 100 rubles ($4.27) for photography, but a few did not permit any pictures. "Professional cameras" are not permitted inside the Kremlin. No one seemed to know for certain what constituted a "professional camera" and unfortunately one of our group was made to leave her camera in the bus. Our current guess is that resolution is not an issue, but looks matter. A small camera is probably safer than a big black body with a long zoom lens, but we really don't know what "big" or "long" means for sure.
