A Trip to Russia - A Walking Street in Moscow - Spring |
||||
Education is obviously important to Russians. All of the guides that we met had graduated from university as did the young lady that kidnapped us in Uglich. Several of the shop keepers that we spoke with also had university training. Because of the language barrier we were unable to get to know the sailors or housekeepers on our ship or the bus drivers on our excursions. Our sampling is obviously incomplete and skewed, but our impression is that Russians value education highly even if they themselves have not had the opportunity to attend an institution of higher learning. The public veneration of education reflected in the monuments as well as the genuine appreciation by the populace of all elements of classical culture would seem to tend in this direction. Most folks we spoke with thought that education under the Soviet Regime was superior to what was in place today. |
