One of the joys of this kind of travel is embodied in one's fellow shipmates. They are usually well-traveled, well-read, and have interesting and diverse backgrounds. Meals were open seating which meant that we could easily find a stimulating conversation at breakfast, lunch, or dinner. We laughed inordinately, discussed a broad range of subjects intently, and stretched ourselves intellectually. One fellow had been a B-17 navigator during WWII, another was a peace corps volunteer in the Ukraine, another was an orchestra conductor who had visited Russia during the Soviet period, and on and on. We never had a dull conversation during the entire trip.
