Almost all of the human Maori figures that we saw everywhere that we went had designs carved into their faces. At first, we did not fully understand the significance of the carved designs. Later we learned that traditional Maori tatoos are literally carved deeply into the flesh - even on the face. (There is more information about this subject in the Wellington section.)
