A Trip to Australia and New Zealand
Christchurch - Canterbury Museum
A small but excellent collection of scrimshaw is a fitting accompaniment to Captain Cook's account of his "Voyage Toward the South Pole and Round The World." This fine carving on ivory not only speaks to the skill of the artist that did it in between sea watches, but also to the length of sea voyages in the day of sail. One needed a pastime that could keep you busy for years at a time.
The Canterbury Museum's extensive collection of colonial New Zealand clothing is spectacular and this case full of ancient rifles speak to the wars between Maori and Maori and between Maori and European settler that tragically characterized so much of early New Zealand history.
