If one were to compare this chapel with those that would be found in Russia proper in the middle of the nineteenth century it would not fair well, but one must remember that New Archangel was eleven time zones away from the splendor of the churches of old Russia. It is important too to understand that this chapel was built by a businessman who had some serious disagreements with the Orthodox missionaries who counseled him to treat his native workers with more kindness and understanding than he felt was consistent with efficiency and profitability of his various enterprises. Simple though this chapel might be, the man who presided here in 1850 went on to become a member of the ruling Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Metropolitan of Moscow.
