There are numerous reminders of the Russian past in Sitka. Graves, reconstructed fortifications, and carvings in the rock all speak to the heritage. It takes very little imagination to conjure up the eighteenth century and to speculate about relations between the Tinglit people and the Russian traders. A situation not unlike many Anglo-European confrontations with native tribes in the lower forty-eight. |
