Glacier Bay National Park - Spring

When a chunk of the glacier falls off it is called "calving." It was explained to us that the weight of the snow falling on the glacier at the top of the mountain creates pressure on the frozen river of ice pushing it down the slope. The bottom of the glacier is forced out into the bay. The warmer water then undermines the ice and eventually a chunk "calves" off the face.

Climate change is obviously also playing a part. The warmer weather that we are experiencing is melting the ice and shrinking the size of the glaciers overall. It also weakens the glacier ice and thus, to a certain extent, speeds up the calving process. People can argue about why the glaciers are shrinking, but not that it is happening.
