Eureka, is located on U.S. Highway 50 in central Nevada, and is the county seat for Eureka County. It was first settled in 1864 when silver was discovered on nearby Prospect Peak. Allegedly the town was named after one of the prospectors shouted "Eureka." In 1869, the first smelters were constructed making large scale mining possible. 1878 almost 10,000 people lived in the immediate area, but the original ore deposits began giving out soon thereafter and most of the mines were closed by 1900. Over the years a great deal of wealth in the form of silver, gold and lead has been taken out of the surrounding area.
