Winnemucca, is the county seat for Humboldt County, Nevada. It is located on Interstate Highway 80, 167 miles east of Reno in the northern central portion of the state. Winnemucca was the home of Paiute Indians before Europeans began exploring the area in the early nineteenth century. Peter Ogden hunted beaver along the Humboldt River in the 1830s. Emigrants followed the Humboldt River across the Nevada desert in the middle of the century and utilized a crossing known first as Graveley Ford and then Frenchman's Ford. Eventually a trading post was established there and in 1863 the place was renamed Winnemucca in honor of the principal Paiute Indian Chieftan in the area. Butch Cassidy robbed a bank there in 1900. Today Winnemucca is an important way station for travelers crossing Nevada. |
