Anson Phelps Stokes started construction of his castle near Austin, Nevada, in 1896. It was completed in 1897. It was modeled after an Italian tower and built of huge native granite blocks. It is three stories high and included a kitchen, dining room, living room, and two bedrooms. Stokes was a successful developer of mines and railroads and lived most of his life in the east. The Stokes family used the castle only briefly in the summer and fall of 1897 before selling their mine which was co-located on the property. It is easily accessed from Austin and presents a great vista overlooking Reese Valley.
