Ely, located at the southern end of the Steptoe Valley in eastern Nevada, was named after Smith Ely, president of the Selby Copper Mining & Smelting Company. The town was founded in 1878 and became the county seat of White Pine County in 1887. In 1906 the Nevada Northern Railroad ran its track into Ely. Long the crossroads of travel in White Pine County, three important highways pass through town - 6, 50 and 93. |
