El Moro National Monument is located in Cibola County in northwestern New Mexico just off of Highway 53. The cliff is weathered sandstone and at its base is a pool of water. Humans have lived in the area for thousands of years. The water source was an important stop for travelers crossing the arid southwest and people have left their mark in the stone since before there was a formalized way of writing one's name. Petroglyphs, proclamations, and elaborate caligraphy date back centuries.
