Silver City - County Seat |
|||||
Silver City, New Mexico, is located on U.S. Highway 180 in the southwestern quadrant of the State. The area was known to Spanish settlers as San Vicente de la Cienega. Apache Indians camped in the vicinity for centuries, but they were pushed aside by Anglo-European miners and ranchers in the later half of the nineteenth century. Silver City was founded in 1870 shortly after Captain John M. Bullard discovered silver nearby. Silver City is the county seat for Grant County and an excellent base for the exploration of the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument. There is a vibrant art community in town and some excellent food. |
