Religious and royal symbols decorate Red Square alongside the symbolism of recent political systems.

There are two churches that face onto Red Square. The most famous and picturesque is St. Basil. The other, the Kazan Cathedral, is at the opposite end of the square and comparatively less well-known (bottom picture). Unlike St. Basil, which is operated as a museum, this church is open for religious worship. The original wooden church was built by Prince Dmitry Pozharsky following his defeat of the Polish army in 1612. That structure burned down and was rebuilt in brick in 1632 by order of the Czar. In 1936 Joseph Stalin tore the cathedral down to make more room for his military parades. It was rebuilt following Perestroika.
