A Trip to Russia - Red Square - Spring |
||||
The GUM Department Store faces onto Red Square and was completed in 1893. It originally housed over one thousand shops. After the 1917 Revolution it was nationalized. After 1928 Stalin used it for office space. In 1953 it was reopened as a department store. After Perestroika, GUM was privatized and today it houses several hundred boutique shops offering high-fashion Western goods. Russians joke that no one can afford to actually buy anything offered in the beautiful shops. |
