This is the site of the western portal of the 3,994 tunnel through the mountain that the German engineer Herman Shussler designed in 1873 to carry both water and lumber through to the eastern slope of the Sierras. From there it went on to Virginia City and the silver mines. The depression in the ground is all that is left of the western portal, but there are still a few sections of pipe from the pressurized water line that fed water into the tunnel. From here the Flume Trail continues on to Marlette Lake.
