Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located at an elevation of 6,000 feet in southwestern Elko and northwestern White Pine Counties in the northeastern quadrant of Nevada. It consists of nearly 40,000 acres of mixed marshland, grassland and upland brush. It is one of the more important water sources in this part of the Great Basin and it attracts birds flying in both the Pacific and the Central Flyways. It is particularly famous for the number of canvasback ducks that nest there. It is considered to be one of the more remote refuges in the system. Gravel and dirt roads connect it to the main road system and are not always passable for all vehicles in inclement weather. Best check road conditions before visiting. The historic cabin depicted below is the Bressman Cabin. Jacob Bressman, his brother Lew and his daughter Deby hauled freight for miners working in the area during the last years of the nineteenth century.
