According to local folklore, Hock Mason passed through Mason Valley in 1854 with a herd of cattle destined for market in California, Liking what he saw in the valley, he returned in 1859 and established a ranch. In 1871 a post office was established. In 1873 the emerging community was known as Greenfield. In 1894 the town changed its name to Yerington in an effort to flatter Henry Marvin Yerington, Superintendent of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad and thus lure the railroad to build the V&T line through their town. It didn't work very well, but the name stuck.
