No one knows for sure, but Fernley was probably named for a doctor that worked for the railroads. According to those who have looked into the matter it would appear that most of the relevant records were destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 and the Lyon County Courthouse fire of 1909. However it got its name, it was established in 1904 in the wake of the Newlands Project which brought water from the Truckee River to the area for the promotion of agriculture. It's proximity to Reno and access to Interstate Highway 80 is currently making it something of a bedroom community for that city.
