The Moab region was a gathering place for Ute and Navajo Indians long before the arrival of Europeans. In 1854 Brigham Young directed twelve of his followers to explore the area and in 1855 a Mormon outpost was constructed. Shortly after its establishment, hostilities broke out between Native Americans and the settlers and the outpost was abandoned. In the 1870s and 1880s ranchers settled the area and the town of Moab was founded. Vanadium, uranium, potash, and manganese along with oil and natural gas have been found in the area, but today tourism is the economic mainstay of the community.
