A Trip to Australia and New Zealand
Sydney - Manly Beach

Manly Beach

Not many folks on the beach, but lot's of surfers in the water, and a whole bunch of people walking, jogging, and biking on the pedestrian path that links the various beaches that all together are Manly.( I may not have mentioned it before, but Australia has a lot of beautiful girls. That is the good news. The bad news is that there are just as many handsome men in the country.)

Just down the coast from Manly is the Sydney Harbor National Park within which are the North Head fortifications that mirror those found at South Head. Together they were meant to protect Sydney from attack from the sea. As it turned out these fortifications were not tested very often, but during World War II three Japanese midget submarines managed to slip in to the harbor in an effort to sink Allied shipping. Two submarines failed totally and their two man crews committed suicide by blowing themselves up. The third sub managed to sink an Australian ferry that had been converted to military use. Twenty-one Australian sailors were killed in the attack.
