A Trip to Australia and New Zealand
Sydney - Watsons Bay
The start of our ferry trip to Watsons Bay was typical of all of the many wonderful ferry trips that we took throughout our stay in Sydney. The headquarters for the ferry fleet is effectively Circular Quay in Sydney Cove near our digs in The Rocks. After leaving the wharf you putter along beside the Opera House and look back into the tall towers of the central city. Very dramatic scenery.
Once clear of Sydney Cove you are in Sydney Harbor along with a variety of other boats, ships, tugs, water taxis and occasionally a kayak or two. Along the shore are small neighborhoods as well as several very impressive parks.
Watsons Bay is located about eleven kilometers up toward the mouth of Sydney Harbor from Sydney Cove. It was named for Robert Watson who served as harbormaster of Port Jackson (Sydney Harbor) in 1811 and was also the first superintendent of the Macquarie Lighthouse a few years later. Watson had arrived in New South Wales in 1788 along with Arthur Phillip on board the flagship of the First Fleet, HMS Sirius.
