A Trip to Australia and New Zealand
Sydney - Australian Museum
The picture above is my current favorite among all that we saw in the Australian Museum. Before this trip I did not even know that dugongs existed and here was an absolutely great work depicting them. We would later see the real thing in the Sydney Aquarium.
The depth of the exhibits of weaponry here was not as extensive as we had seen in some of the Maori exhibits in New Zealand, but there were enough examples for you to get an idea of how these people killed each other. Apparently stone age folks all over the world basically all did it the same way.
Unlike the Maori, the indigenous people of Australia included a great deal of imagery of animals in their art work. Some of the creatures were, of course, different than what we see in North America, but the way in which the images are inscribed on wood reminded me somewhat of the feel of what one sees in Alaskan art.
