A Trip to Australia and New Zealand
Sydney - The Rocks

The Hero of Wellington public house

The Battle of Waterloo that did Napoleon in and made Wellington a hero took place in 1815. The Hero of Waterloo Hotel and Public House was established in 1843 and is one of several that claim to be the oldest public house in Sydney. Hero is on the tourist map and gets visited by all manner of serious aficionados of the finer things in life as well as gawking tourists - some of whom come on bicycle tours.

Famous Stout

bartender

It was early afternoon when we visited and the bartender had enough time to give us a rather thorough briefing on a variety of Australian beers that we had never heard of let alone tasted. Although we had already decided that our favorite was the James Squire set, we tried all of the new ones and found it difficult to say that there were any bad beers in the lot. We also decided that we need to revisit Sydney in their winter so that we could have dinner in front of their open fireplace one chilly evening.
