Sand Mountain

Sand Mountain is located a few miles east of Fallon, Nevada on Highway 50. The shape of this enormous sand dune is constantly changing, but its location remains constant. The Northern Paiute Indians knew Sand Mountain as Kwazi. Kwazi was the name of the snake that inhabited this mountain of sand and the crest of the dune was its backbone. In 1859 Captain James H. Simpson surveyed the route for the Central Overland Wagon Road past Sand Mountain. In 1859 the Pony Express established a station a mile to the northwest. Today it is a recreation area for off road vehicles.
