Manhattan, Nevada, is located on Nevada Highway 377 (a spur off of Nevada Highway 376) about fifty miles north of Tonopah. Silver was discovered nearby in 1866, but the ore petered out a few years later. In 1905 and 1909 richer deposits of precious metals were located and Manhattan rapidly grew into an important mining town. Several decades later the ore gave out again, virtually everybody left town, and Manhattan became a ghost of itself. Today a few people still live in the town, but it is visited primarily by those seeking a peek into the past.
