Tonopah

Tonopah is located on U.S. Highway 95 about half way between Reno and Las Vegas. Tonopah Springs was an important water source to Native Americans long before any Anglo-Europeans entered the area. Jim Butler discovered silver in the area in 1900 and soon thereafter the town boomed around his Mizpah Mine. The community was known as Butler in those days. In 1901 a post office was established and in 1905 the official name of the burgeoning town was changed to Tonopah. That same year Tonopah was designated county seat of Nye County. Wyatt Earp operated the Northern Saloon here from 1902 to 1904.
