A Trip to Russia - St. Petersburg - Catherine's Summer Palace - Spring

In 1718, a smallish summer palace was built for Czarina Catherine I, the wife of Peter the Great, 26 kilometers outside of St. Petersburg in a place that became known as Tsarskoye Selo (Czar's Village). Catherine's daughter, Empress Elizabeth, enlarged it and later Czarina Catherine II built it into what it is today. In 1937 the name of the town surrounding the palace was changed to Pushkin in honor of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin who had died a century earlier.
