A Trip to Russia - St. Petersburg - Peter and Paul Fortress - Spring

The Peter and Paul Fortress on the Neva River in St. Petersburg was founded on May 27, 1703 by Peter the Great to protect his new city from attack by the Swedish army and navy. It also served as a place of incarceration for important prisoners. Peter's son Alexei was one of the first to be held there, but in later years Dostoyevsky, Gorky, Trotsky and Lenin's older brother, Alexander, were also imprisoned there. The Peter and Paul Cathedral in the center of the fortress is the burial place of all of the Russian Emperors and Empresses from Peter the Great to Alexander III.
