Following the Revolution of 1917 the monarchy was eliminated and St. Petersburg's name was changed to Leningrad. Lenin and his successors attempted to concentrate all power in the state and transform Russia virtually overnight into a worker's paradise. Although life for the average Russian was dramatically changed, the bricks and mortar results were often intimidating as well as gray and drab. Regardless of political considerations, the structures of Leningrad were definitely not as elegant as those of St. Petersburg and they are not holding up as well either. (The reader will note various reflections in a few of the pictures in this section. No worries - bus windows sometimes yield revelations like Lenin about to fall victim to the dreadful ghost of St. Petersburg traffic.)
