A rather pretentious gold encrusted chair in Peterhof is inscribed with an "I" and an "H." It was not on the main line of march for our tour group and I did not get a chance to ask about it, but I presume that Peter may have used this as his throne following his taking of the title "Imperial Highness" in 1721. Only three of Europe's reigning monarchs (Augustus II of Poland, William II of Prussia, and Frederick I of Sweden) recognized Peter's claim to the title of emperor. it is interesting to note that all three were close neighbors. The rest of Europe snubbed Peter on this point, apparently fearing that it might give him a feeling of superiority in his relationship with themselves.
