A Trip to Russia - St. Petersburg - Church of Our Savior on the Spilled Blood - Spring |
|||||
The style of architecture chosen for the Church of Our Savior on the Spilled Blood was controversial in nineteenth century Saint Petersburg. At the time of its construction most of the important buildings around it had been constructed in Baroque, Classical and Modernist styles. Presumably with his patron's approval, the chief architect, Alfred Parland, designed a memorial in what might be called traditional Russian style, externally somewhat reminiscent of Saint Basil in Red Square. |
