The magnificent delft heater in the corner is one of the most attractive things that I found in the Russian palaces. I can easily imagine just how good it would feel on a cold morning. One of the things that struck us was the fact that we did not see any heaters in any of the state rooms in the Winter Palace but we did see them in the summer palaces of both Catherine and Peter. I presume that this is because, during WWII, everything was pretty well destroyed in all of these places and when the Winter Palace was restored it's primary function was to house the Hermitage art collection - not to illustrate the czar's residence.
