Peter's Maritime Study is located in one corner of the palace. He was fascinated with ships and ship building. He learned to sail at a young age and while in Europe studied ship building in Holland. During his reign, he emphasized maritime advancement and one of his principal foreign policy objectives was to gain and hold ports that would permit year-round access to the world's ocean trade routes. The establishment of Saint Petersburg on the Gulf of Finland was directly related to this objective. From these windows he could see his new city as well as his opening to the world's oceans. The paneled walls are full of intriguing designs including this satyr. |
