A quick tour of any jewelry store in Russia makes it obvious that Russian jewelers have ready access to large amounts of gold and diamonds, but the most interesting items for us were those made with amber. The Russian royal family obviously also appreciated this fossilized resin material because they paneled an entire room in one of their palaces with it. A bit over the top even for a monarch, but impressive none the less. After looking at mostly costume jewlery for nearly two weeks all over Russia, we found just the right pair of beautiful amber earrings for an acceptable price in the store aboard our ship.
