Elsewhere I indicated that we did not get into any really controversial subjects with any of our new Russian friends, but there was one exception. At one point one of our group asked one of our guides what Russians thought of our activity in Iraq. The guide's response was diplomatically imprecise. The conversation was then moved to Russian activity in Chechnya. The response was quick and sharp - Iraq is a sovereign country while Chechnya is part of Russia. Moscow has the right to resist political dissolution of the country. I stayed out of the conversation, but couldn't help thinking that Abraham Lincoln might agree with Moscow while George Washington might not.
