Before we left home, several of our friends warned us that we might encounter street crime while in Russia, particularly in the big cities. We were told that statistics indicated that the level of crime directed against tourists was a significant fact of life in the urban areas. On several occasions while in country, we were warned to beware of pickpockets, but fortunately none of our group experienced any problems during this trip. We did notice that a number of the shops selling high-end articles had rather dour looking private guards posted at their doors, but we had already gotten used to that back home where even the big box stores now check one's receipt on exiting the store.
