Park benches and pigeons are fixtures common to parks around the world, but gold floating on the water is rare. As the reader will have seen from these pictures the palaces and churches of Russia are full of gold and it is interesting to consider where this precious material came from. Much of it was mined in Russia itself, but a significant portion of it came from mines around the world. Pizzaro and Cortez appropriated Inca and Aztec gold and then sent it to Madrid where the King used it to pay for his European wars. Money changers passed some of it along to the czars who used it to glorify their icons and buildings.
